I like watching movies. A lot of people do. Nearly every genre is welcome. One of the genres I can‘t get behind is „adventure movie“ (Indiana Jones is the only exception that comes to my mind). Adventure movies are mostly a mixture of different genres (comedy, action) with a family-friendly rating. My movie watching behaviour does not work like this. I like R-rated movies with a lot of gore or movies that are exhausting to watch (Gaspar Noe‘s movies are strongly recommended if you share this attitude). Night Flight Orchestra is the musical representation of an adventure movie. I just don‘t get the approach. The sheer happiness, the glee that radiates from this is too much for me.

As I was chosen for the Author’s Choice in March, I knew I had to take Aeromantic by The Night Flight Orchestra. Yes – I will torture one or two people with this, but this band is one of my guilty pleasure (Classic)-Rock/AOR Bands. It’s a band that plays a cheesy, pleasing sound and concept combined with high quality work in this genre. Okay, if there are people like Björn Strid and David Andersson of Soilwork and Sharlee D’Angelo of Arch Enemy behind this project, then you have experienced musicians backing up this idea of a corny 70s/80s genre band. Where a lot of people considering Ghost as the best example for that, and I must admit that Ghost has some good songs, overall. Nevertheless, to me it is The Night Flight Orchestra. The last three albums are all high-quality content, and their new album is as good as the previous ones. Again, as I heard Aeromantic the first time, my head, feet and hips weren’t motionless, no matter if it looked embarrassing for the rest on public transport. I can only recommend- if you even remotely like music as described above, listen to this album or the band.

The major share of the audience that ends up on this page probably has seen at least one of the Karate Kid movies from the 80s. If not – any other similar kind of movie works as well. At one point of any such kind of movie enters the “buildup” sequence where the protagonist continually trains for whatever big event is gonna come – yes you know what I mean. In my opinion, this entire album feels as having been written to fill exactly this sequence of a movie – there is this Eye of the Tiger vibe oozing from the sound from front to back. The production is absolutely neat and clean – which means the exact opposite of what I usually listen to. If you enjoyed playing that Power Rangers game on your SNES back in the 90s and went crazy when that final sequence started, where an 8-bit version of Eye of the Tiger was played on a loop – listen through this album.

With Aeromantic, The Nightflight Orchestra once again invites you to the 80s Rock disco with catchy melodies, cheesy hooks and bulky Pop synths fused into a bunch of highly melodic Rock songs which all in all are staged in a very spectacular and cinematic way. However, this type of Rock music is not delivering the goods I am looking for, so unfortunately my dancing shoes stay in the closet until further notice.

Actually I like the bands music. It paints colours and pictures in my head. It lets me think in neon, it lets me think of TV-series from the 80s and early 90s. Each song feels a little like “I know this tune” or something, and I can start thinking about a plot, a main character and the special twist of a TV format…you know…an intelligent and speaking car, timetravel or maybe a rocket-driven helicopter or anything like this 😉
