Cryptworm – Spewing Mephitic Putridity (Review)

Sometimes you know exactly what you’re getting. You see the band logo, the song titles and the album artwork and you know, yeah this is going to be nasty. That’s exactly how the sound of Cryptworm can be described.

From the probably dirtiest and darkest alleys of England, Cryptworm come forward with their debut album. Spewing Mephitic Putridity was released on March 11th via Me Saco Un Ojo Records.

The LP was probably recorded in the filthiest sewer in Bristol. Because that’s what it sounds like. If you like disgusting Death Metal, you’ll get your money’s worth here.
“Disgorged Chunks of Life” instantly sounds like an evil twin consisting of Undergang and Demilich.

Especially the guitar riffing has structures that remind me strongly of that legendary Finnish band. This is also upheld like a theme throughout the album.

In addition to the aforementioned riffs, the drumming also stands out positively. Based on the tempo changes, which move between blast beat and doomish down parts, Autopsy and Obituary vibes quickly arise. Especially on “Immense Cerebral Decomposition” and “Disembowelment (Draped in Gore)” you can hear this clearly.

Everything is then supported by the monstrous vocals. Here you can really use any synonym for disgusting and it would be fitting. Tibor Hanyi‘s voice strongly reminds me of David Torturdød from Undergang.

Especially on “Septic Phlegm Asphyxia” these guys from England try to show off their technical vein – which more than succeeds and they definitely do not have to hide behind greats like Demilich.

I can absolutely understand that there are people who find Spewing Mephitic Putridity repetitive. However, there are always some highlights hidden here and there. Especially the slower song structures come to mind. At some points, the drums groove quite a bit. Besides the already mentioned Obituary and Autopsy influences, you can also hear Bolt Thrower elements at some spots -at least concerning the drums.

Overall, Cryptworm deliver a very strong debut album with Spewing Mephitic Putridity. A clear increase compared to the last two EPs. Of course, this record is not ground breaking, but I think after listening to the first song this should be clear to everyone. These Englishmen play uncompromising Death Metal, where you can clearly hear their influences and idols. As I said, just the look of the album artwork and song titles clearly shows where the journey goes. Hide in the next sewer and grab Spewing Mephitic Putridity.

If you like raw and rotten Death Metal, you should definitely listen to this, it’s worth it.
