Patrik’s Favorite Releases of 2024

Like every year, no special order of the albums.

Kanonenfieber – Die Urkatastrophe

Probably the album that I have listened to the most this year. The second album effortlessly joins the qualitative output of Noise. Very great Death / Black Metal while nothing is glossed over on the subject of war.

Alcest – Les Chants de L‘Aurore

Even though the new album is much quieter than its predecessors, the album still oozes Alcest and Post-Rock from every pore. A must-have album for anyone who feels at home in post-rock.

Kettcar – Gute Laune ungerecht verteilt

A regional newspaper gave the band the following assessment: ‘There are still upright left-wingers’. Marcus Wiebusch has always written at the centre of the times, criticising and questioning everyone and himself. Stirring, honest, but also with a spark of hope.

Sleepmakeswaves – It’s Here. But I Have No Names For It

Not a year without Post-Rock from Australia. This album takes you through various sub-genres of post-rock and makes for a wonderful musical journey. I sat by the lake with the album in my ears far too often and enjoyed it.

Midas Fall – Cold Waves Divide Us

I said it in my review: candidate for the top 10 and the album has managed to defend one place. Music that triggers head-cinema and never gets boring even after repeated listens. The band and the music deserve a LOT more attention.

Slomosa – Tundra Rock

Really got into the band through Steve and the Keep It Low Festival in October. Modern stoner rock that is incredibly energising and fun. The song “Monomann” is definitely one of my favorites this year.

I Häxa – i Häxa

It took me a while, but this album is bursting with ideas and courage like hardly any other release this year. Folk, Trip-Hop, Drum’n’Bass, Noise, Post-Rock, everything is thrown into the cauldron and mixed into a wonderful piece of music. Pure art.

Gaerea – Coma

Gaerea shows us with this album just how much Black Metal can be played in different directions. The extreme elements are constantly contrasted and played with new ideas. BM fans should definitely give it a listen.

Zeal & Ardor – Greif

Noticeable changes in the musical ideas done right. On their fourth album, the Swiss band are once again playful and exciting, but lose nothing of their uniqueness.

Oh Hiroshima – All Things Shining

Another post-rock highlight that fuses post-rock with Shoegaze and fits perfectly into the Pelagic Records line-up. Dark atmosphere runs through the album with wonderfully placed highlights.
