It is with great pleasure that for the third time in a row we are able to attend the legendary Party.San festival.
With so many bands on the billing, we have prepared a small guide to show you some of our highlights.
Even if you are not attending the festival, there might be some bands you should definitely check out.
Thursday, 8th of August
Bastard Grave
Mainstage
(1.45 – 2.30 p.m.)
It’s going to get really nasty with Bastard Grave. Somewhere between Dismember and Autopsy, the Swedes have created an absolutely hideous sound. While they have tended to play small clubs in Germany so far, I am all the more pleased to see this band on a big festival stage. OSDM with a dose of punk. Rotten to the core.
Broken Hope
Main Stage
(2.45 – 3.30 p.m.)
Often overlooked by many metal heads, Broken Hope are one of the most important representatives in the death metal scene. Alongside Suffocation and Dying Fetus, they are often mentioned as an important influence, especially for younger bands. Swamped in Gore is an absolute classic and should not be missing in any record collection. Broken Hope rarely play in Europe, so you should take the chance to see them at Party.San.
Unfortunately, Broken Hope cancelled their show due to health reasons.
Eternal Champion
Mainstage
(3.45 – 4.30 p.m.)
The Texans will certainly provide a little variety. Their epic heavy metal sound is a real treat among all the death and black metal bands. If you don’t know the band yet, you should definitely get your ass in front of the stage and raise your fist in the air. Sharpen your swords and put on your best chain mail, because Eternal Champion will turn Party.San into a battlefield. R.I.P Brad Raub
The Black Dahlia Murder
Main Stage
(6.50 – 7.35 p.m.)
After five long years, TBDM are finally coming back to Europe. The Americans will be performing at Party.San for the third time. Newly formed or rather back with old friends, the death metal veterans have been destroying every stage on the globe for almost a year now. After the tragic death of frontman Trevor Strnad, it’s great to see The Black Dahlia Murder continue on their path and bring a smile to the faces of many fans with classics such as Miasma, Deathmask Divine or Funeral Thirst. By far one of the most likeable bands ever and one of many highlights at Party.San
Left to Die
Mainstage
(7.55 – 8.40 p.m.)
Left to Die will be performing for the first time ever at the Party.San festival. The band consists of members from Exhumed, Gruesome and of course former Death musicians. The audience will have the pleasure of hearing timeless Death classics live. Whether it’s Leprosy or Scream Bloody Gore, there will be no shortage of hits here. Death the only way.
Terrorizer
Main Stage
(10.20 – 11.20 p.m.)
When talking about grindcore, there are only a few bands that have been very ground breaking for this genre. Alongside Napalm Death, Repulsion and Nasum, Terrorizer are definitely at the top of the food chain. World Downfall is considered a grind masterpiece. So, it’s all the better when these metal legends will perform the entire album at the Party.San. A gig not to be missed, because when else will you get to enjoy a World Downfall set?
Abbath
Main Stage
(11.45 p.m. – 1.00 a.m.)
I miss Immortal. Even though Abbath has started a successful solo project and Demonaz continues to release music it feels wrong somehow. Maybe I’m just too nostalgic. Thanks to the Party.San or to their booking team, people will get the chance to experience what might feel like a small Immortal comeback. Because on Thursday, Abbath will be performing various hits of his former band as the headliner of the first day. What could be better than listening to songs from At the Heart of Winter or Battles in the North?
Friday, 9th of August
Afsky
Main Stage
(3.10 – 3.55 p.m.)
Ole Pedersen Luk is the mastermind behind the Danish black metal band Afsky. Danish folklore paired with atmospheric black metal shows the interesting concept behind the band. The north Europeans are one of the most up-and-coming black metal bands in the scene in recent years. The Danes will take you on a dark journey that you won’t forget in a hurry.
Kraanium
Main Stage
(6.25 – 7.10 p.m.)
“No glam just fucking slam” actually describes Kraanium perfectly. For over 20 years, the band has been shaking the stages with their ultra-hard slams. Even though there have been several line-up changes over the years and Kraanium can now be seen more as an amalgamation of several international musicians, the band has always remained true to itself. So, if you like brute and gory death metal, you shouldn’t miss this band on Friday. Show me some hammers!
Incantation
Main Stage
(7.30 – 8.15 p.m.)
Incantation are probably one of the most consistent death metal bands ever. A flawless discography, which includes not one bad album, underlines just how good this band is. Incantation simply always deliver, whether it’s on record or on stage. The US guys literally have death metal in their blood. With their monstrous riffs and the distinctive voice of John McEntee, Incantation have been among the absolute elite for over 30 years. Uncompromising death metal and another highlight at Party.San that you shouldn’t miss.
Konvent
Tent Stage
(10.55 – 11.45 p.m.)
One band that has caused quite a stir in recent years is Konvent. The Danes have already played various major European festivals in recent years and are now doing the honours at Party.San. With a nasty mixture of death and doom metal, these women provide a real spectacle when it comes to dark atmosphere. Call Down the Sun and Puritan Masochism are two breath-taking releases that have amazed many critics. With songs from these two records, they are sure to get the Party.San audience headbanging.
Saturday, 10th of August
Necrot
Main Stage
(1.45 – 2.30 p.m.)
If there’s one band that embodies the spirit and attitude of OSDM, it’s definitely Necrot. No bullshit, no gimmicks, no poser shit. Death metal, exactly how it should be played. Skull-crushing and neck-breaking. Who needs coffee when you can be woken up by Necrot on the mainstage at noon on a Saturday? For the first time at Party.San and hopefully not for the last time. Necrot stand for everything there is to love about death metal and for that reason alone you shouldn’t miss these guys.
Ultha
Main Stage
(2.45 – 3.30 p.m.)
Ultha are by far one of the best German black metal bands ever. With their melancholic & gloomy atmosphere, the band creates a breath-taking overall concept. It feels as if you are being pulled directly into a black hole and have to stay there for all eternity. Rarely has a band captivated me as much as Ultha. In 2017 they played on the tent stage. After 7 long years it is more than necessary to see Ultha again at Party.San, this time on the main stage. Fasten your seatbelts!
Phantom Winter
Tent Stage
(4.20 – 4.55 p.m.)
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Phantom Winter emerged from the remains of Omega Massif and various dark ideas. Anyone who has always wanted to know what Twin Peaks or The X-Files would sound like as a metal band will find their answer here. Whether it is winter doom or brute sludge, Phantom Winter’s sound is truly unique. A band that worked their asses of during the last years and truly deserves to on the billing. Don’t miss Phantom Winter and thank me later for my recommendation.
Sulphur Aeon
Main Stage
(5.45 – 6.30 p.m.)
Cthulhu and various other creatures from the H.P. Lovecraft universe are welcome guests when it comes to death metal. However, there are few bands that can capture this abstract and mystical world as well as Sulphur Aeon. Their music and albums almost feel like a ritual that conjures up a hideous monstrosity. Rarely does a death metal band succeed in creating such a mental concept while they perform. Sulphur Aeon will take you on a nightmarish journey. Beware!
Hellripper
Tent Stage
(8.35 – 9.10 p.m.)
The Scottish export Hellripper are probably one of the hottest bands at the moment. James McBain, the mastermind behind the band, is a true musical genius when it comes to capturing the essence of speed and black metal within the songs. If Venom and Motörhead would have an illegitimate son it would probably be Hellripper. You can look forward to an energetic performance that will really shake up the tent stage.
