Sparkling. That is the first word that comes to mind, when the first seconds of “Good Reasons to Freeze to Death” come through your speakers. Like light broken on water. But around the 1 minute mark, the sparkling becomes blinding and burning, Screamo-Mode is fully engaged and one of the best openers this year begins. Two years after the already great Modern Grotesque, Dreamwell now return with In My Saddest Dreams, I Am Beside You and they really knock it out of the park this time.
“Good Reasons to Freeze to Death“, “Studying the Greats in Self Immolation” and “Lord have MRSA on My Soul” start off this album and any Screamo-fan’s heart will rejoice with glee. The following two epic collaborations with Wounded Touch on “All Towers Drawn in the Equatorial Room” and “Obelisk of Hands” with Logan St. Germain keep the the energy high and put some colors to the flames.
“Reverberations of a Sickly Wound” serves as an island of tranquility before the stomping “Blighttown Type Beat” and the furious “Body Fountain” set the stage for the intense and sprawling 2-step, 15 minute-finale that is “I Dream’t of a Room of Clouds” and “Rue de Noms (Could Have Been Better, Should Have Been More)“. The first one is a Greet Death-like mid-tempo maelstrom while the latter one shrinks, shrieks and swells until the liberating end.
Dreamwell have succeeded in creating a captivating and exciting record that will surely be found on numerous year’s end lists. In My Saddest Dreams, I Am Beside You is like flying glass shards directly into your face. In one moment you’ll be amazed by the beautiful colors coming your way but in the next moment it hits you with all its emotional weight. Either way, it gets to you. You will remember and you will cherish this experience.
