It is no secret that Copse’s last EP Mara | Mondrem blew our minds. It was a long time ago that Post-Black Metal sounded so captivating and good. Freshly signed to the fine folks of Church Road Records, Copse release their second EP Old Belief | New Despair roughly one year after the first one.
After the neat little intro “*“, “Old Belief” blasts its way into the hearts of the listeners. “Old Belief” is Copse in a 5,5 minute nutshell: soaring melodies, blistering but never dull / monotone drumming and atop of it all the screaming of Ed Gibbs. So if anyone hasn’t got that much time to appreciate Copse, this track will certainly do.
“New Despair” is a whole different beast. Clocking in around the 15 minute mark, it builds upon the sound of their debut EP and takes it to whole new level. This whole track sounds like a drama of Greek proportions. The first half is the epic build-up while the second half more and more shifts into cathartic greatness.
Old belief | New Despair is a fantastic follow-up to Mara | Mondrem. The promises given on their debut are more than fulfilled here: Copse continue to be one of the most exciting bands coming out of the Post-Black Metal genre.
